Description

A medium sized tree. It grows 8-15 m high. The stems have a few scattered hairs. The leaves are simple and alternate. They are in 2 rows. The leaf blade in broadly oval. They are 8-40 cm long. They can be round or heart shaped and often unequal at the base. They taper to the tip. There are tiny irregular scales over the leaf surface. The veins are prominent underneath. The leaf stalk is 4-12 mm long and thick. The flowers occur as many in heads. The male and female flowers are separate on separate trees. The fruit are oval and 6-8 mm long. The fruit are green but red to black at maturity.

Edible Uses

The fruit are edible.

Distribution

A tropical plant. In Samoa it grow between 100-850 m altitude.

There are 6 Gironniera species. They occur in Asia and the Pacific.
