Description
An evergreen tree. It grows to 20-25 m tall. The trunk can be 40-50 cm across. The bark is grey-white and 0.6 cm thick. It is smooth. The branchlets are round in cross section and greyish brown. The leaves are simple and opposite. They are leathery and oblong. They are 5-7 cm long by 2.5-3.5 cm wide. The tip is narrowed and with a point. The leaves are dark green on the upper surface and paler underneath. There are many visible oil dots. The leaf stalk is 0.7-1.2 cm long. The flowers occur in a cluster either in the angles of leaves or at the end of branches. The flowers contain both sexes. The fruit is a berry. It is round and 0.6-0.7 cm across. There is a crown at the tip. The fruit is edible.

Distribution
A tropical plant. It occurs in Vietnam and China. It occurs in tropical forest below 1,000 m above sea level. It can tolerate light shade and requires shade when young.

It grows from fresh seed.
Production
It is a slow growing tree. Flowering occurs in June to July in the northern hemisphere and fruiting occurs towards November.
