Description

A twining vine. The leaves are simple and 4-12 cm long. The young growth and the veins under the leaf are usually purple. Plants are separately male and female. The fruit are 5 mm across. The occur in clusters along stalks, in the axils of leaves. There is one seed inside. The seed is 4 mm across. The cut seed has tiny gold dots around the edge. The flesh of the fruit is edible.

The flesh of the fruit is edible.

Distribution

It is a tropical plant. It grows naturally in highland rainforests in Queensland, Australia. It grows from sea level to 1130 m altitude.

There are about 140 Embelia species. Also put in the family Myrsinaceae.
