Description

A tree. It grows 15 m tall. The trunk can be 20 cm across. It forms a narrow pillar like or cone shaped plant. The branches hang down close to the plant. The leaves are oval and 12-25 cm long by 7-14 cm wide. They are red when young. The flowers are greenish-grey and in the axils of leaves. The fruit are bright red.

Edible Uses

The fruit is eaten.

Distribution

A tropical plant. It is native to New Guinea. It grows in lowland forests.

Cultivation

Plants can be grown by seed.

Production

It is slow growing.

Notes

There are about 300 Garcinia species.
