A ginger family herb. It keeps growing from year to year. It produces a clump of leafy stems. It grows about 60 cm tall. It has an underground rhizome or stem.
Edible Uses
The rhizome is used as a spice and can also be boiled and eaten for its starch content.

Cultivation
Plants can be grown from seeds. Seeds germinate best at about 20°C. Plants can be grown from division when dormant.
Propagation
Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe. Germinates best at temperatures around 20°c. Division of the rhizome when the plant is dormant.

It is a cultivated plant.
Notes
There are about 50 Curcuma species. They are mostly in SE Asia.
