Description

A medium sized tree. It grows 8-20 m high and spreads 3-5 m wide. Young growth has grey or yellow hairs. The leaves are 5-15 cm long by 1.5-5 cm wide. They are broadly sword shaped and thin and papery. They are greenish-brown and shiny above and greyish and hairy underneath. The edges are wavy. The flowers are 0.8 cm across. They can occur singly or in clusters of 2-3. The fruit are berries. These are 3.2 cm long by 1 cm wide. They are oblong and black. There are 2 seeds and they are 2 cm long by 0.8 cm wide. They are brown and shiny.

Edible Uses

The fruit are eaten as berries.

Distribution

A tropical plant. It grows in rainforests in NE Queensland in Australia.

There are about 100 Planchonella species. They are mostly in Asia and the Pacific.
