Description

Layia glandulosa is a ANNUAL growing to 0.3 m (1ft). It is frost tender. It is in flower from July to August. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and is pollinated by Insects. Suitable for: light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils, prefers well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It prefers dry or moist soil.

Edible Uses

Seed. The seeds can be ground into a powder and used with other ground seeds in a mush or porridge.

Distribution

Western N. America.

Where It Grows

NORTHERN AMERICA: United States (Idaho, Oregon, Washington), New Mexico, Arizona, California, Utah), Mexico (Baja California (Norte))

Cultivation

Succeeds in ordinary garden soils and also in poor soils. It prefers a dry sunny bank and requires a very well-drained soil if it is to thrive. A frost tender annual, it does not thrive in areas with hot humid summers.

Propagation

Seed - sow March/April in a greenhouse. Prick out the seedlings into individual pots as soon as they are large enough to handle and plant them out in early summer. Alternatively, if you have sufficient seed it is possible to sow in situ during April/May.
