Description
A large evergreen tree. It grows 20-25 m tall. The trunk is 30-60 cm across. The first branches are above 7 m. They are yellow brown and hairy when new. The fruit is hard and egg shaped. It is 2 cm long with 2 grooves along its length.
Edible Uses
The fruit is eaten.
Distribution
A tropical plant. It Vietnam it grows between 900 to 2200 m altitude. In S China it is between 1500-1800 m altitude in Yunnan. It grows on deep fertile humus rich soil.

Notes
There are about 360 Elaeocarpus species mostly in the tropics.
