Chloranthus japonicus is a perennial herb in the Chloranthaceae family.

Description

A herb that keeps growing from year to year. It grows 20-40 cm high. It has creeping rhizomes or underground stems. Erect stems arise from the ends of the rhizomes. There are 4 leaves together. The flowers are white and do not have stems.

The young shoots are used as a potherb.

Medicinal Uses

The root contains sesquiterpenes and coumarins. It is used medicinally in Korea to treat dermatopathia and enteric fever.

Distribution

It is a temperate plant. It grows in the shade of deciduous forests.

Cultivation

We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy in Britain. However, judging by its native range, it is likely to succeed outdoors in most areas of the country. The plant is likely to prefer woodland conditions in moist fertile soils.
