Summary

Annual herb reaching 1 foot tall. Wind-pollinated hermaphrodite growing in light sandy, medium loamy, and heavy clay soils. Tolerates mildly acidic through mildly alkaline pH and saline conditions. Requires full sun and moist soil. Salt-tolerant and suitable for coastal areas.

Annual herb reaching 1 foot tall. Wind-pollinated hermaphrodite growing in light sandy, medium loamy, and heavy clay soils. Tolerates mildly acidic through mildly alkaline pH and saline conditions. Requires full sun and moist soil. Salt-tolerant and suitable for coastal areas.

Edible Uses

The leaves are cooked and have a salty flavour. They are traditionally used together with soy beans.

Cultivation

We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy in Britain, though judging by its native range it should succeed outdoors in many parts of this country. It dislikes shade, see the plants native range for other ideas on its cultivation needs.

Propagation

Sow seed in spring, direct in situ.
