Grevillea leucopteris, also known as old socks or white plume grevillea, is a species of flowering plant in the family Proteaceae and is endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. It is a spreading, bushy shrub with divided leaves with erect, linear lobes and clusters of white to cream-coloured flowers displayed above the foliage.

Description

A large bushy shrub. It grows 3 m high. There are leaves down to ground level. The leaves are large and divided along the stalk. These consist of soft segments 10-20 cm long. The new tips are red. The flowers are in large leafless panicles above the leaves. They are creamy-white. The young buds are covered with sticky pinkish-brown bracts. The flowers are rich in nectar. The flowers have a sickly unpleasant odour. The fruit are oval brown follicles. These open and fall off. They are 2 cm long by 1 cm wide. There are 2 flat winged seeds inside.

The seeds are edible.

Distribution

It grows in deep sands in Western Australia. It needs well drained soil. It needs a sunny position. It suits warm temperate climates. It suits hardiness zones 9-10.

Plants can be grown from seed. The seed germinate 15-60 days after sowing.
