Description
Physaliastrum echinatum is a PERENNIAL growing to 0.6 m (2ft). It is in flower from June to August, and the seeds ripen from July to September. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs). Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It prefers moist soil.
Edible Uses
Fruit. The fruit, which is enveloped in its calyx, is about 10mm in diameter.

E. Asia - China, Japan, Korea and Russia.

This species has mistakenly been treated in various floras as Physaliastrum japonicum (Franchet & Savatier) Honda, which is a different species found only in Japan.
