Ruttya fruticosa, also known as jammy mouth or jêmbekkie, is a shrub which is native to Africa. It can be found in South Somalia to Tanzania and in the woodlands of Dhofar, Oman. The name Ruttya was named in honour of Dr John Rutty and fruticosa means shrubby and refers to the habit of the plant.

Description

A shrub. It grows 3 m tall. The leaves are opposite and oval. They are 4-12 cm long by 2-4.5 cm wide. The flowers are red with a black centre. The fruit are cup shaped and have 4 seeds.

Edible Uses

The flower nectar is eaten.

Distribution

It is a Mediterranean climate plant. It grows in arid regions.
