Description

A tree. It grows 60 m tall. The trunk can be 100-150 cm across. It can have buttresses. The leaves are spaced along the branches in spirals at the nodes. They are 8-31 cm long and 3-12 cm wide. The flowers occur singly in the axils of the leaves. They are 5 cm across and white to yellow. The fruit is 4-10 cm long and red. There are 100 seeds 1-10 mm long.

Distribution

It is a tropical plant. It grows up to 1,000 m above sea level.

Other Uses

The heartwood is pale brown, clearly defined from the straw-coloured sapwood, it has a persistent, spicy smell. The wood is close-grained, durable, strong and easily worked. It is used for making high grade furniture, house construction, boat building etc.
