Cultivation

Succeeds in full sun to moderate shade. Found in the wild on hillsides with fertile, clayey soils. Established plants are drought tolerant. A slow-growing tree even when young.

Other Uses

The bark is a source of tannins. The wood is medium-textured, more or less uniform, moderately heavy, hard to cut, with moderate mechanical properties and good durability. The wood is used in general construction for purposes such as boards for internal divisions and flooring; for making furniture; window and door frames; and for external purposes such as poles, crosspieces, bridges etc.
