Vasconcellea palandensis is a species of plant in the family Caricaceae. It is endemic to Ecuador. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. It is threatened by habitat loss. It was previously placed in genus Carica.

Description

A small tropical tree in the Caricaceae family with separate male and female plants, compound leaves of 5–9 leaflets, and fruits 7–8 cm across carried along the trunk, with seeds arranged in 5 groups surrounded by pulp.

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw. The sweet pulp surrounding the seeds is eaten by putting the whole mass of seeds and pulp into the mouth, sucking and then spitting the seeds out. The seeds and pulp can also be mixed with water and sugar, stirred and then strained to make a fruity drink. The yellow-orange, subglobose fruit is up to 85mm in diameter.

The fruit pulp is eaten raw. They are also cooked. They can be used for a drink.

Propagation

Seed - sow in individual containers or in a nursery seedbed in light shade. Germination can be slow and difficult, taking about 30 days. Seedlings can be planted out when 4 - 6 months old.

Notes

A small tree. Plants are separately male and female. The leaves are compound and there are 5-9 leaflets like the fingers on a hand. The fruit are carried along the trunk. The fruit are 7-8 cm across. The seeds are arranged in 5 groups. There is pulp around each group of seeds.
