Fuchsia regia is a plant species in the genus Fuchsia native to Brazil.

Description

A shrub. It loses many leaves during the year. It grows 1.5-3 m tall. The branches hang down. The leaves are simple and opposite. They are papery and have a short leaf stalk. The leaves are 4-6 cm long. The flowers occur singly in the axils of leaves and hang down. They are tube shaped and purple-red. The fruit are oval berries. They have a sweet taste. The fruit can contain calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the throat.

Edible Uses

Fruit - raw. A sweet-tasting, succulent pulp. The fruits contain calcium oxalate crystals. The ellipsoid fruit is 10 - 27mm long and 9 - 13mm wide.

Distribution

It is a tropical plant. It grows in high altitude regions in Brazil. It grows on wet slopes between 700-2,000 m above sea level. Hobart Botanical Gardens.

Cultivation

Plants can be grown by seed or cuttings.

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe though stored seed can also be used. Surface sow the seed in a semi-shaded position in a seed tray, gently pressing the seed into the compost, and do not allow the compost to dry out. Germination should take place in less than 6 weeks. Prick out the seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle, and grow them on until large enough to plant out. Inter-nodal cuttings of greenwood, 5 - 8cm long in a frame. Quick and easy, a high percentage take. Inter-nodal cuttings of half-ripe wood in a frame. Very quick and easy, treat as greenwood cuttings above. Cuttings usually succeed at any time during the growing season.
