Description

A shrub in the mallow family with white flowers that tolerates salty conditions, growing in areas with up to 2.0-2.5% salinity.

Edible Uses

Seed - cooked. The hulled seeds somewhat resemble millet (Panicum spp.), containing 32% protein and 22% oil.

Cultivation

A plant of mainly temperate to subtropical areas, just entering into the tropics in Cuba. Plants can tolerate temperatures down to -15°c. Requires a sunny position. Succeeds in well-drained soils so long as it is irrigated, otherwise it prefers growing in wetter soils. Plants can tolerate 2 - 2.5% salinity during growth.
