Summary
Source: WikipediaSchizophyllum commune is a species of fungus in the genus Schizophyllum. The mushroom resembles undulating waves of tightly packed corals or a loose Chinese fan. Gillies or split-gills vary from creamy yellow to pale white in colour. The cap is 1–4 centimetres (3⁄8–1+5⁄8 in) wide with a dense yet spongey body texture. It is found on rotting wood throughout the world. This fungus is an opportunistic environmental pathogen.
Description
A mushroom. The fruiting bodies are grey and fan-shaped. They can be 2-4 cm across. The gills spread out from the point where the fruiting body attaches to logs. The edges of the gills are thick and split or like a groove.
Edible Uses
This mushroom is reportedly edible when young. The species was regarded as nonpoisonous by Orson K. Miller Jr. and Hope H. Miller, who like David Arora regard it as inedible due to its smallness and toughness. It is chewed by some natives of Madagascar.
Traditional Uses
The mushroom is cooked and eaten. Dried mushrooms can be preserved. It can be tough so is boiled for 1 or 2 hours with salt added or cooked with meat in curries. It is also cooked with dried fish.
Distribution
A tropical plant. It grows in tropical Africa. They grow in groups on dead wood.
