Description
A shrub or small tree. It grows 3-12 m tall. The trunk can be 3-8 cm across. The bark is papery and peels off. The leaves are opposite and 9-16 cm long by 3-6 cm wide. The fruit are 2.5-4 cm long by 3-4 cm wide. They are purple.
Edible Uses
The purple fruit is edible.
Distribution
A tropical plant. It grows from sea level to 1,400 m above sea level.

Africa, East Africa, Madagascar,
Production
In Madagascar plants flower January to June and fruit March to November.
Notes
There are about 550 Eugenia species. They are mostly in tropical and subtropical South America.
