Description
A shrub or small tree. It grows 1-5 m high. The branches can be smooth or hairy. The leaves can be simple or compound. The leaves on the trunk can be simple or have up to 11 leaflets. The leaf blade is 11-16 cm long by 6-12 cm wide. Compound leaves are larger. The fruit are oval and 2-9 cm long by 1-3 cm across. They are yellow or orange when ripe. There are 2 subspecies.
Edible Uses
The fruit is eaten.
Distribution
A tropical plant. It grows between 500-3,000 m altitude in South America and between 20-400 m altitude Central America.
