Description

A bamboo. It forms clumps. It grows 15 m tall. The stalks are 6-12 cm across. They are bluish-green. The sheath has dark brown hairs. The blade is broadly sword shaped and it is hairy underneath. The flowers can be on the leafless or leafy branches.

Edible Uses

The shoots are eaten.

Distribution

It is a tropical plant. It grows up to 400 m above sea level.

Cultivation

It is grown from cuttings of the culms.

Other Uses

The culms are used as building materials for making items such as pillars, walls and roofing. They are also used for making the Batak traditional calendar "perhalaan". Th young culms are used for cooking glutinous rice ("lemang").
