Strophanthus gratus is a plant in the dogbane family Apocynaceae.

Description

A woody climbing vine in the Apocynaceae family that grows up to 25 m long. It is a tropical plant found in rainforests in humus-rich soils.

It is used for medicine.

Known Hazards

Strophanthus gratus has been used in local traditional medicine: ouabain derived from the plant's seeds is used as a treatment for heart failure. It has also been used as arrow poison.

Distribution

It is a tropical plant. It grows in rainforests and in humus rich soils.

Cultivation

Prefers a sunny position in a moist but well-drained, fertile, humus-rich soil. When growing in humid regions, the plant can flower all year round. Regular pruning can maintain the plant as a shrub.

Propagation

Seed - Cuttings of young wood.

Notes

It is used for medicine and the juice as an arrow poison.
