Description

An erect herb. It grows 40-70 cm high and spreads 60 cm wide. It keeps growing from year to year from a stout rootstock. The leaves are narrowly sword shaped and pale green. They are 20-40 cm long. The flowers are violet-blue. They are in dense clusters in the axils of leaves.

Edible Uses

The leaves are edible.

Medicinal Uses

The roots are used in traditional medicine.

It is a temperate plant.

Cultivation

Plants are grown from seed. Plants can also be grown by division or from offshoots.

Notes

There are about 400 Gentiana species. The roots are used in medicine.
