Brazil, South America,

Cultivation

Succeeds in full sun to moderate shade. Prefers a well-drained soil of moderate fertility. Established plants are drought tolerant. Young plants have a moderate rate of growth.

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a lightly shaded position in a nursery seedbed. A low germination rate can usually be expected, with the seed sprouting within 42 - 56 days. Cuttings of short-jointed, semi-ripe, non-flowering wood. Pot each cutting up singly and keep in a humid, shaded position at around 25°c until rooted. Air layering

Other Uses

The wood is fine and uniform-textured, straight-grained, heavy, hard, flexible, with moderate mechanical properties and moderately durable if protected from the weather. Because of its small size the wood is only used for purposes such as cabinet making, lathe work and tool handles. The wood is used for fuel and to make charcoal.
