Heterospathe elegans is a species of flowering plants in the palm family (Arecaceae). It is found in New Guinea.

Description

A palm without a short stem. It is 7-10 cm across and can be 8 m tall. It can occur singly or in clusters. There are 7-9 leaves. The sheaths are 55-67 cm long. It has a well defined crownshaft. The leaf stalk is 20-40 cm long. There are 38-56 leaflets along a rachis 2 m long.

Edible Uses

The stem base is eaten.

Distribution

It is a tropical plant. It is widespread throughout mainland Papua New Guinea.
